Two must-reads from top Canadian mystery writers

Canadian mystery writers are continuing to churn some gripping and engaging tales of murder, mystery and intrigue. Here are a couple worth checking out.

A Noise Downstairs, by Linwood Barclay

A murder mystery in a suburban town, with a supernatural twist. A Noise Downstairs tells the story of the college professor who witnesses a murder. Worse still, he knows who did it after seeing a friend dumping two bodies. His discovery very nearly leads to his own demise. Although he survives, he is still scarred by what he saw and on the advice of his wife, decides to write it all down in the form of a story.

He takes out an old typewriter and begins to type. But when he is lying in bed at night, he can hear the typewriter’s clacking. Is it part of his own port-traumatic experiences or is something more sinister at play.

A Darkness Of The Heart by Gail Bowen

The latest instalment in the Joanne Kilbourn series of novels sees Bowen shine a light on Kilbourn’s personal life. When Joanne finds out that her biological father isn’t who she thinks it is, it knocks her off balance. She finds out that Desmond Love, a close friend of who she thought was her real dad, turns out to be her father.

However, she has little time to process this as, when a film crew moves into making a documentary about visual artist Love, Joanne’s own family begins to get sucked into a more sinister side of the movie business.
